Tuition Waiver Approved for Select Direct Enroll Study Abroad Programs

Ohio State students participating in university-approved third party provider and direct enroll study abroad programs will soon see a decrease in costs to participate in these types of programs. The Ohio Board of Regents recently approved a waiver of tuition for Ohio State students who participate on university-approved third party provider or direct enroll programming while maintaining simultaneous enrollment at Ohio State. The decision follows a recommendation by The Ohio State University Board of Trustees.

The purpose of the waiver is to make the cost of these programs commensurate with Ohio State study abroad programs. Without the tuition waiver students would in essence pay double tuition. Previously, students who enrolled in these types of study abroad programs paid tuition to both Ohio State and the host institution, which substantially increased the cost of studying abroad.

The tuition waiver enables students to remain enrolled at Ohio State while participating in university-approved third party provider/direct enroll study abroad programs while paying tuition only to the provider. By keeping these students connected to the university, Ohio State will be better positioned to manage their health and safety should an emergency occur while abroad.

The waiver does not affect those students participating in Ohio State sponsored programs, which are supported, managed and administered by the university.

The Office of International Affairs maintains the list of approved provider and direct enroll programs. The tuition waiver is in effect for university-approved provider or direct enroll programming that occurs August 27, 2014 through June 30, 2015, and applies only to those programs on the approved list.
