European Cities and Sustainable Urban Planning Program: Information Session

All dates for this event occur in the past.

As part of the European Cities and Sustainable Urban Planning Practices program, students will explore the diverse approaches to planning and urban design found throughout Europe, specifically in Denmark, Germany and Sweden. Students will address the general principles of sustainability, examine in the field how some of these principles have been put into practice and focus on historical precedents, cultural differences and planning and design priorities. Not only will students gain an understanding of the planning, design and function of the European cities, but discuss and analyze how applicable these approaches and technologies might be for U.S. urban areas.

The travel includes site visits to key locations in three separate countries that have made a conscious and comprehensive effort to become more "sustainable" in a variety of ways. Innovative and trend-setting projects in sustainable design and construction are of particular interest. Specific topics of study include urban design strategies, parks and plazas, eco-neighborhoods, new town planning, waterfront redevelopment and public transportation systems.
