A workshop for Ohio State staff and colleagues who are currently managing international service learning programs and those who are interested in creating new programs.

This Workshop is presented by the Sustainable and Resilient Tanzanian Community (SRTC) program in partnership with the College of Engineering, International Initiatives, the College of Food Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Education Abroad with the support of the Office of International Affairs Education Abroad unit and the Office of Service Learning. The SRTC is an international inter-disciplinary service learning program hosted by the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geodetic Engineering and the School of Environment and Natural Resources in partnership with the University of Dodoma, the Kilimanjaro Hope Organization and the village of Marwa, Tanzania.

 

The workshop will:

  • Share and describe the experiences and values based participatory process of the SRTC program
  • Detail and debate the importance of inter-cultural relationship management in program sustainability when   working with developing world communities
  • Identify and critique considerations for building capacity with in-country partners
  • Create a space for participants to share and network ideas and opportunities with their peers and colleagues from across Ohio State.

 

The workshop will be presented in 3 parts:

  1. Welcome and introductions
  2. Formal presentation and discussion on the SRTC program and process
  3. Facilitated small group activity focusing on participant needs and aspirations

 

The workshop will be facilitated by SRTC Team members:

  • Michael J. Hagenberger, Ph.D., P.E. Assistant Dean for Facilities Planning and Management and Associate Professor of Practice, Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geodetic Engineering
  • Joseph T. Campbell, PhD. Lecturer and Director of the Environmental Professionals Network, School of Environment and Natural Resources
  • Mary E. McLaughlin, M.Sc. Career Development Coordinator, College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences
  • Tony Duke, Program Manager, the Sustainable and Resilient Tanzanian Community program
